Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher can add to his record number of winners in the Cigar Mile when he sends out Grade 1 winner Mind Control in the 2022 Cigar Mile on Saturday at Aqueduct Race Course. The 55-year-old Pletcher has won the Cigar a record five times, including last year with Americanrevolution. No other trainer has more than three wins. On Saturday he goes for No. 6 with Mind Control, a 6-year-old who has earned more than $1.7 million in his career and will be making his final career start. Mind Control is 5-2 in the 2022 Cigar Mile odds. Blue Grass Stakes winner Zandon is the even-money favorite in the six-horse Cigar Mile 2022 field. Get Her Number (4-1) and White Abarrio (9-2) round out the top in the odds. Post time for the one-turn mile race is 3:43 p.m. ET. With an accomplished field set to enter the starting gate on Saturday, you’ll want to see what SportsLine writer Gene Menez has to say before making any 2022 Cigar Mile picks.

A former reporter and editor at Sports Illustrated, Menez covered an array of sports, including horse racing, for the magazine and its website for almost 14 years. Between 2010 and 2012, he served as SI’s handicapper for the Triple Crown races and correctly predicted Super Saver to win the Kentucky Derby in 2010.

In 2015, while writing for Sports on Earth, Menez accurately gave out the Kentucky Derby superfecta (American Pharoah, Firing Line, Dortmund and Frosted), which paid $1,268.20 for $2. Then in 2017, he tweeted out his Kentucky Derby picks, including Always Dreaming to win, and hit the Pick 4, which paid almost $6,900 on a $1 bet.

Now, he has handicapped the 2022 Cigar Mile lineup and made his picks and constructed his bets. You can only see them at SportsLine.

Top 2022 Cigar Mile predictions

One surprise: After taking a deep dive on every horse in the field, Menez is fading Mind Control, who is second in the odds at 5-2. A son of Stay Thirsty, Mind Control has two wins and two seconds in five starts this year. He is coming off a second place finish in the Parx Dirt Mile.

But on Saturday Mind Control will not be able to run with Lasix, an anti-bleeding medication. In seven career starts without Lasix, he has won only once. “My strongest opinion is to play against the second choice, Mind Control,” Menez told SportsLine. Mind Control does not appear on any of Menez’s wagers. See which horses to back at SportsLine.

How to make 2022 Cigar Mile picks

Menez’s top pick is a horse who “should appreciate the cutback in distance.” He is including this horse in his wagers, and so should you. He’s sharing which horses to back only at SportsLine.
