Boom import Nugget has retained favouritism for the $2m The Ingham even though he might not squeeze into the field for the rich Royal Randwick mile race on Saturday.

Nugget, who has the limit weight of 54kg, is currently 22nd in order of entry for The Ingham which has a bumper 30 entries. The maximum field size is 20 from the 1600m start.

TAB Fixed Odds price assessors have kept the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained Nugget as the $4.50 favourite to win the Group 2 The Ingham (formerly The Villiers Stakes).

The Ingham topweights are Doomben Cup winner Huetor and former Hong Kong galloper Sunshine Rising who have both been allocated 59kg, a handicap no horse has carried successfully in this race since Key in 1963.

Huetor is on the second line of betting at $6 just ahead of last start winners Riodini (The Gong) and Dajraan (Festival Stakes), and last year’s Villiers winner Brutality at $8.

Brutality has been allocated 54kg, one kilo more than he carried to success last year, and if he can defend his title on Saturday he will be the only dual winner in the race’s 130-year history.

Trainer John O’Shea has three entries for The Ingham with mile specialist Kirwan’s Lane, Lion’s Roar and Berdibek, and he will also saddle up promising sprinter Waihaha Falls, the $4.50 favourite for the Listed $160,000 Razor Sharp Handicap (1200m).

Gin Martini, winner of the Sandown Cup last start, and the in-form Rondino share favouritism at $4.50 for the Listed $160,000 Christmas Cup (2400m).

The other feature race at Royal Randwick on Saturday is the $500,000 Inglis Nursery (1000m) where the Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou-trained first-starter Facile has earned $2.80 favouritism after two runaway barrier trial wins.
